Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen Lodge 183 records, 1936-1964.

Consists largely of worker claims and correspondence between the Local, the Chicago and North Western Railway Company, and the international union. Includes correspondence from the BRT's Iowa State Legislative Board, and a subseries on the 1946 railroad strike. Correspondence from the international includes discussion of President Truman's Fair Deal program, wage rates, and strikes. Grievance materials relate to Local 183's disputes with the Chicago and Northwestern over freight weights, mileage, strikes, working conditions, and layoffs. Also includes correspondence concerning wages, hazardous conditions, accident reports, and conflicts between the BRT and other rail unions. Of note are the materials on the 1946 railroad strike, including day to day descriptions of the strike, passwords used, strike ballots and public statements by various rail unions. Pamphlets removed to the Library.

The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen was founded in 1883 in Oneonta, New York as a protective and insurance organization. By the time of its merger with three other railroad labor unions to form the United Transportation Union in 1969, it had the greatest membership of any of the operating railroad brotherhoods.
